email digest

I wasn't suggesting two separate lists, although I have no idea what the difference would be in creating a digest option.

I used to maintain email lists through the UCB Major domo thing (forgive me for my non-tech talk), and each subscriber had considerable amount of control over email preferences without generating separate lists. Other listservs also have the option (Yahoo, Gmail, etc) It's my personal preference of format as well...I just like the digests and plain emails without pictures, etc. Call me boring :D I already archive my emails and attach labels via Gmail, so here's a pat on the back in advance for all the other CHAOTS who want to remind us all about how wonderful and quick and easy it is.

And Charlie's insight hit the nail on the head - I didn't realize that this would irritate more during finals and the holiday season because I am stressed out :-D Regardless, everyone has different preferences, and this seems to be a recurring issues as there seems to be two main groups: those who want the status quo and those who would like a digest.

It's not like we (the complainers) asking to impose our idea of what "normal" email volume should be on the rest of the group. We're just asking for a separate option if possible. And because I am not familiar with the set-up of this email listserv, I didn't volunteer to write some new program, so the most I can do at this moment is make a suggestion. But if anyone can point me in the right direction with sufficiently detailed steps for me to muddle around with, I could try my best!

Hi Ashley-Marie -

Thanks for the suggestion: its been discussed in the past, and thanks for offering to help. Not that we couldn't do it, but mainly the reasons we haven't done it are:

1 - the reasons David outlined... not worth the hassle

2 - everyone doing anything for chaos is a volunteer, and most of those volunteers already do A LOT, don't want to do more, and mostly, like the list the way it is. So somebody new would have to step up, in a big way.

3 - None of us really know how the email list works (!). It was set up about 10-15 years ago, works great, but there are no "detailed instructions"... we don't even have anybody who could help you out (well, we do, but he lives in France and helps out once-in-a-while when something *really* breaks). Therefore, any change would be a BIG, like changing to MajorDomo, or something. We've discussed this too, but decided against it, for various reasons.

4 - If you're still interested in this topic, I can direct you to the folks who most recently met on all this stuff... but you'd probably have to do most of the work to change anything.
